Mosquito or crane fly?
Crane flies are the large, gangly, long-legged insects people frequently panic about, calling them giant mosquitoes. They do not bite and do not feed on blood at all. Mosquitoes are much smaller, with a distinct piercing proboscis and scaled wings.
If it is an inch across, wobbling around a porch light, and looks like a mosquito that has been stretched, it is a crane fly and it is harmless.
Mosquitoes in Central New York
Mosquito pressure in this region is a function of standing water within a surprisingly short distance, and the amount required is small — a clogged gutter, a tarp fold, a saucer under a plant pot, a tire, a bird bath, or a corrugated downspout extension can each produce hundreds. Container breeding around the house typically matters more to what is biting you than the marsh half a mile away.
Low-lying areas carry more pressure: the Ithaca flats near the creeks and the lake, and the Susquehanna floodplain in Owego, particularly in a wet summer. Peak season runs from late spring through early fall.
The honest framing is reduction, not elimination. Removing breeding containers and treating harborage — the shaded, humid vegetation where adults rest during the day — makes a real difference to a yard. No treatment makes a property in a river valley mosquito-free.

What is the single most effective thing I can do about mosquitoes?
Walk the property and empty every container holding water — gutters, saucers, tarps, tires, toys, buckets, corrugated downspout extensions. It takes very little water to produce hundreds of mosquitoes, and container breeding close to the house usually affects you more than any wetland nearby.
Can you eliminate mosquitoes from my yard?
No, and we will not claim otherwise. Treating resting harborage and removing breeding sites reduces the population using your yard substantially, which is a real improvement you can feel. Elimination is not achievable, especially on low ground near creeks, the lake, or the Susquehanna.
