Lone star tick or another tick?
The female is unmistakable: a single bright white or cream dot in the center of the back. Males have fainter white markings around the rear edge of the shield. They are also noticeably aggressive compared with other ticks — they will actively pursue a host rather than waiting.
Lone star ticks in Central New York
Lone star ticks are far better established in the southern parts of New York — Long Island and the lower Hudson Valley — than in the Finger Lakes and Southern Tier, but their range has been expanding northward. It is reasonable to treat them as present but uncommon here rather than routine.
They are worth knowing about for one unusual reason: their bite is associated with alpha-gal syndrome, a delayed allergic reaction to mammalian meat. They do not transmit Lyme disease. If a tick with a clear white dot is found, that is worth mentioning to a clinician.
