Blacklegged tick, dog tick, or lone star tick?
This identification has real health consequences, so it is worth doing carefully. The blacklegged tick — commonly called the deer tick — is small, with an adult female showing a solid dark brown-black shield behind the head and an orange-red body, and legs that are distinctly dark. It has no white markings. Nymphs are roughly poppy-seed sized and are responsible for a large share of Lyme transmission precisely because they are so easily missed.
American dog ticks are noticeably larger with mottled white or silvery patterning on the shield. Lone star tick females have a single conspicuous white dot in the center of the back. Neither of those transmits Lyme.
Blacklegged ticks in Central New York
The Finger Lakes and Southern Tier sit in a region with substantial Lyme disease incidence, and the blacklegged tick is the vector. Adults are active in spring and again in fall, and will move on any day above freezing — including mild winter days, which surprises people. The nymphs, active in late spring and summer, account for much of the transmission because they are so small.
Exposure concentrates at edges rather than in open lawn: the transition where mown grass meets tall grass, brush, or woodland, and leaf litter under shrubs. That is why maintaining that boundary and treating harborage areas makes a measurable difference, and why properties backing onto woods in Danby, Newfield, Forest Home, or the Danby Road corridor carry more risk than a mown suburban lot.
Prompt removal matters. Transmission generally requires a substantially attached period, so daily checks after time outdoors are among the most effective precautions available.
