Wood cockroach or German cockroach?
This distinction saves a great deal of unnecessary alarm. Pennsylvania wood cockroaches are about three quarters of an inch, brown, with pale translucent edges along the front margin of the thorax and forewings. Males have full wings and fly readily toward lights — which is how most people encounter them. They lack the two dark stripes of a German cockroach.
Behavior is the giveaway. Wood roaches appear in ones and twos, usually in late spring and early summer, often near windows and lights, and they do not establish in kitchens or bathrooms. German cockroaches multiply in food areas and are present year-round.
Wood cockroaches in Central New York
These are outdoor insects that live under loose bark, in woodpiles, and in leaf litter, and they wander or fly indoors accidentally, mostly in May and June. Wooded properties — Forest Home, the gorge edges, Danby, Newfield, and rural parcels generally — see them most.
They cannot establish an indoor population, so the correct response is usually identification and reassurance rather than treatment. Moving firewood away from the house and reducing exterior lighting that draws them helps.
