German cockroach or another roach?
German cockroaches are small — about half an inch — light brown to tan, with two dark parallel stripes running lengthwise behind the head. That stripe pattern is the reliable marker. American cockroaches are much larger and reddish-brown; Oriental cockroaches are dark, almost black, and glossy.
Size and location together are diagnostic. A small striped roach in a kitchen or bathroom, especially near appliances and in cabinetry, is a German cockroach and indicates an indoor breeding population. A large roach in a basement or drain is a different species and usually a different problem.
German cockroaches in Central New York
This is the cockroach that matters in our service area, and it is a building problem rather than a housekeeping one. German cockroaches breed indoors continuously in heated buildings, which is why they show up as readily in January as in July, and they travel between apartments through shared plumbing chases, wall voids, and utility risers.
That structural spread is why they concentrate in the older multi-unit stock of Elmira, in Collegetown buildings with commercial kitchens on the ground floor, and in subdivided student rentals in Ithaca and Cortland. Treating one unit while connected units go untouched relocates the population and it returns — the standard reason these infestations become permanent.

Does having cockroaches mean my apartment is dirty?
No. German cockroaches spread through buildings via shared walls, plumbing chases, and utility runs, and they arrive in deliveries, boxes, and used appliances. A spotless apartment in a building with an untreated infestation will still get them. Sanitation helps control the population, but it is not what caused it.
Why do they keep coming back after treatment?
Almost always because the treatment was confined to one unit in a connected building. The population moves along shared walls and chases during treatment and returns afterward. Connected units need to be handled together, and where there is ground-floor commercial kitchen space, that has to be included.
