Raccoon or something smaller?
Raccoons are heavy, and that is usually the first clue — attic or chimney noise from a raccoon sounds like a person moving around, quite unlike the skittering of squirrels. They are nocturnal, and the vocalizations of a female with young are distinctive: chittering, mewing, and crying sounds that people often mistake for birds or even a cat.
Tracks are diagnostic where visible: the front paw print looks remarkably like a small human hand.
Raccoons in Central New York
Raccoons commonly den in attics, chimneys, and under decks and porches, and the great majority of building intrusions in spring involve a female seeking a safe place to raise young. That timing matters enormously for how the job has to be handled.
Removing or excluding an adult female while dependent kits remain in the structure leaves the young to die inside — an inhumane outcome and a serious odor and sanitation problem in a wall or attic. Any spring raccoon job needs to establish whether young are present before anything is sealed.
Raccoons are also a rabies vector species in New York, and their droppings can carry raccoon roundworm, so contaminated attic insulation is a genuine health matter rather than just a mess. Cleanup should be handled accordingly.

Raccoon — common questions
There is a raccoon in my attic in the spring. Can it just be removed?
Not without first establishing whether there are young. Most spring attic raccoons are females denning to raise kits, and excluding the mother while the young remain leaves them to die inside the structure — inhumane, and a severe odor and sanitation problem. The young have to be accounted for first.
Is raccoon waste in an attic actually a health issue?
Yes. Raccoon droppings can carry raccoon roundworm, and raccoons are a rabies vector species in New York. Contaminated insulation should be handled as a genuine cleanup job with appropriate protection, not simply swept out.
