Elm leaf beetle
Xanthogaleruca luteola
- Identification
- Small (¼ inch), yellow-green to olive with dark stripes along the wing covers. Associated with elm trees.
- Lifecycle & behavior
- Feeds on elm foliage in summer; adults seek shelter in structures to overwinter in fall.
- When it's active in Central NY
- Where elms remain in CNY, adults enter homes in fall to overwinter and emerge indoors on warm days, like the other fall invaders.
- Risk & damage
- A nuisance indoors; the outdoor damage is to elm foliage. No harm to people or the home.
- Why DIY falls short
- Interior spraying misses the overwintering population in wall voids.
- How we treat it
- Included in the timed exterior barrier and sealing program for overwintering pests.
Elm leaf beetle or Asian lady beetle?
Elm leaf beetles are elongated and oval rather than round-domed, olive to yellowish-green with a dark stripe along each wing cover. Asian lady beetles are distinctly dome-shaped and orange to red. Once you see them side by side the shape difference is obvious.
Elm leaf beetles in Central New York
They feed on elm foliage through the summer, skeletonizing leaves, then move to buildings in fall to overwinter — the same pattern as the rest of the fall invasion and driven by the same sunny-wall preference. Properties with mature elms nearby see them; properties without them generally do not.
They are harmless indoors and, as with the other overwintering insects, the effective control is exterior and timed for late summer rather than indoor treatment once they have settled into wall voids.

Elm leaf beetle — common questions
Why do I suddenly have these beetles every October?
They are overwintering. Elm leaf beetles feed on elm foliage all summer, then move to buildings in fall and enter wall voids through gaps around windows, siding, and soffits. If there is a mature elm near the house, that is the source.
