Identification
Creamy-white workers and dark swarmers; build mud tubes from soil to wood. Swarmers have equal-length wings.
Lifecycle & behavior
Colonies live in soil and tunnel to wood, eating it from the inside out; mature colonies swarm to spread.
When it's active in Central NY
Lower pressure than the South but present in CNY. Spring swarms and mud tubes are the usual first evidence; damage progresses hidden.

Serious, concealed structural damage over time — the reason WDI inspections exist for real-estate transactions.
Why DIY falls short
Because the colony is in the soil and damage is hidden, surface treatment doesn't reach it; misidentification (vs. carpenter ants) is common.

Termite or carpenter ant?

The three checks are waist, antennae, and wings. Termites have a broad straight-sided body with no pinched waist, straight beaded antennae, and — in the winged stage — two pairs of wings of equal length that shed easily, often leaving small piles of discarded wings on windowsills. Carpenter ants have a pinched waist, elbowed antennae, and wings of unequal length.

Damage differs as clearly. Termites pack galleries with soil and mud and build mud tubes up foundation walls to maintain contact with the ground. Carpenter ants keep galleries clean and smooth and push out coarse frass. Mud tubes are essentially diagnostic.

Eastern subterranean termites in Central New York

Termite pressure in this region is genuinely lower than in much of the country, and activity in the Finger Lakes and Southern Tier is scattered rather than uniform. The overwhelming majority of structural insect damage we see here is carpenter ant, not termite. It is worth saying plainly, because homeowners often assume the worst.

That said, eastern subterranean termites do occur in New York, and they require soil contact and moisture. Where they do turn up it is typically associated with wood-to-soil contact, damp crawlspaces, and buried or ground-contacting structural wood.

This is the insect a WDI inspection for a real estate transaction is primarily looking for, which is when most homeowners in the region encounter the question at all.

Do we actually have termites in the Finger Lakes?

They occur in New York but are far less prevalent here than in much of the country, and activity locally is scattered. The overwhelming majority of structural insect damage in this region is carpenter ant. If you find damage, carpenter ant is much the more likely cause — but identification should still be done properly.

What is the clearest sign of termites rather than ants?

Mud tubes — pencil-width soil tunnels running up foundation walls or piers — are close to diagnostic, because termites need to maintain contact with soil moisture. Discarded wings of equal length on windowsills after a swarm is the other strong sign. Carpenter ants produce neither.
