Why late summer is dangerous
Yellowjacket colonies grow all season and peak in late summer and early fall, when they can number in the thousands and turn highly defensive. A wall-void nest disturbed at that point can produce a lot of stings fast — a serious risk, especially for anyone with a sting allergy.

Do not plug the hole

What to do instead
Keep people and pets away from the entrance, especially in late summer when the colony is at its largest and most defensive. Note where the traffic is going in and roughly how heavy it is. Then have it treated properly — the colony has to be dealt with before the entrance is closed, not after.
Once the colony is confirmed dead, sealing the opening is worthwhile, because an accessible cavity tends to attract future colonies. The sequence is what matters: treat, confirm, then seal.
Aerosol wasp sprays from a hardware store are designed for visible open nests and generally do not reach a colony inside a wall void. A partial knockdown mostly produces an agitated colony, which is the condition you least want in a wall you are standing next to.
